 West Elk Wilderness
The United States Congress designated the West Elk Wilderness Area as part of the original Wilderness Act of 1964 and it now has a total of 176,172 acres. All of the wilderness is in the state of Colorado. For a complete listing of public laws and further information on district offices, click here.

Devoid of fourteeners and sparkling alpine lakes, West Elk's most attractive offering may be a large and untamed area with very few humans. During fall hunting season, when numerous bull elks bugle the trails and campsites fill with humans. Elk and deer number in the thousands. You'll find many mountain passes leading to secluded and seldom-seen valleys filled with beaver ponds and lined with aspen that turn a fantastic and indescribable gold in September.

Volcanic activity of 25 million years ago produced long lava flows, sometimes pushing mud before them. Ridges were crumbled and carved by wind and water into fantastic turrets, pinnacles, and crenellated bulwarks. The topography is reflected in many of the area's geographic names: Castle Pass, Castle View, Castle Creek, the Castles.

About two hundred miles of trails, following creeks and ridge tops, offer opportunities for extended loop hikes through the West Elks, the fifth largest Wilderness in Colorado. Most of the trails provide excellent pathways for horse traffic.

 City of Crawford
Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountain's West Elk range, Crawford is surrounded by extraordinary views created by majestic mountains and unique geological structures. Crawford is a small town with a small town atmosphere and the serenity that only a small town can offer. Our economy is supported by ranches, vacation lodges, local artisans and visitors from around the world. The Crawford Reservoir State Park and our proximity to the Gunnison Nat'l Forest, West Elk Wilderness and Black Canyon Nat'l Park make this area a paradise to live and play in.

Crawford Reservoir, located in Crawford State Park , provides year around challenges for anglers who enjoy matching wits with northern pike, trout, bass, and crappie. Camping is available in the park and boating, skiing, and swimming are permitted on the lake.
